Frequently asked questions
I’ve never been out of the country. Is this a bad first trip? It’s close to an ideal one. You travel with a group and two faculty members, lodging and transport are arranged, and Denmark is among the easiest countries in the world to navigate in English. You are never figuring it out alone.
I don’t have a passport. Start now — this is the most common reason students miss a program. Processing takes months, and you cannot study abroad without one. The International Programs Office can walk you through it.
Do I have to be a Women’s and Gender Studies minor? No. The course is open to every major and counts for Political Science, Sociology, or WGS. Students from any program are welcome, and the mix is part of what makes the conversation good.
Can I see the syllabus? Here is a very Tentative Syllabus Draft. There are no books to purchase.
Can I work during the spring semester? Yes. The course is fully online and asynchronous with two live sessions all term. The only time you need to be away is May 11–20.
Is there a research paper? No. You keep a daily field journal in Copenhagen, then have a fifteen-minute one-on-one conversation with an instructor after you return, plus a short group presentation in June.
$4,896 is a lot. What are my options? Financial aid may apply to study abroad. YSU offers the Glen C. El-Hayek Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship, and national awards include the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which is aimed at Pell-eligible students, along with the Fund for Education Abroad and Boren Awards. Deadlines for these generally fall well before the program, so email us early. Cost is the most common reason students rule themselves out and often the most solvable.
What’s not included in the price? Meals beyond daily breakfast, your passport, and personal spending. Lunches and dinners in Copenhagen vary widely depending on how you eat and drink. We recommend budgeting $1610 for these other costs.
What if I have to cancel? Cancellation terms are set by WorldStrides and tighten as the departure date approaches, with penalties beginning after the roster closes in February. Ask us before you commit if you think your plans may change.
Do I need to speak Danish? No. Denmark has among the highest rates of English fluency in the world, and all academic sessions are in English.
Can I stay longer or travel on my own afterward? Sometimes, depending on flight arrangements. There is a process and a fee for deviating from the group itinerary, and it has to be arranged well in advance. Talk to us before booking anything.
I have a disability or a medical condition. Can I still go? Yes, and please tell us early so arrangements can be made. The program includes health insurance and 24/7 support while you’re in country. Early notice gives us the most options.
What is actually required to apply? Register for the course for Spring 2027, then reserve your spot by making your downpayment of $565.
Still not sure? Email either instructor. We would rather talk with you about whether this is right for you than have you decide on your own that it isn’t.
